World War Z
This a good example of a thriller to watch and analyse because it is very modern. Although this is a thriller film i watched this to analyse some of the camera shots used.
I really like the titles for this film, they are basic shots of very normal things like; people getting of a train, birds flying in the sky and a boy riding a bicycle etc. The shots have triangle shaped areas masked out and these masked areas are either a little magnified or blurred. This is a very common feature in thriller films, it makes ordinary things seem abstract.
The first shot of the main film tricks the audience, it is a slow zoom into a bedroom through a door which is slightly open. When I saw this shot I thought it was a really good piece of camera work, however i wanted a real threat to appear through the door. I believe doorways are very important in thriller pieces, this is because they can represent someone passing from one thought to another or someone feeling safe to someone feeling vulnerable. For this reason my piece ends in a door slamming. However in this example the audience expect something evil to come through the door but it is in fact a red herring.
When the panic starts in the city all camerawork is handheld, this increases the tension and panic whereas smoothing panning shots etc. would make the situation calmer. There was also a very fast jolting birds eye view shot of the city centre with all the chaos going on, it showed all the people running away. The fact it was a birds eye shot shows that they are incredibly weak and defenceless against the outbreak of 'zombies'.
There's selective sound so we hear the people screaming how ever a few times it is overpowered by a high pitch noise. The soundscape in this part is all diegetic it makes it seem a lot more realistic. This makes the audience feel more for the characters and helps offer a more emotional connection between them. An effect that I would like to incorporate is lots of action going on with very little diegetic sound.
